SUMMARY:INOVA - University of Wisconsin Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:7:30 p.m. \nConcert in conjunction with a new exhibition:\n“Leo Saul Berk: The Uncertainty of Enclosure” \n“The Source”\nTIMO ANDRES – Austerity Measures (25′)\nDAVID SKIDMORE- Percussion Quartets (12′)\nSTEVE REICH – Music for Pieces of Wood (8′)\nBRUCE GOFF – Piano Rolls (12′) (World Premiere\, arr. by Third Coast Percussion)\nJOHN CAGE – Third Construction (10′) \n“The Uncertainty of Enclosure” explores the impact of an architecturally iconic residence—Bruce Goff’s Ford House in Aurora\, Illinois—on the art of Leo Saul Berk. Goff utilized unconventional materials and extraordinary techniques to achieve fluid forms inspired by nature. Berk has created a body of work informed by his childhood experience at the home\, his historical research\, and his ongoing reflection on the house’s pivotal role in the development of his artistic vision. \nThird Coast Percussion has explored connections between music and architecture in past programs\, and in this program they perform music that re-imagines and re-invents source material in exciting new ways. Andres’s new work\, Austerity Measures\, is a theme\, variations and recomposition of J.S. Bach’s first 2-part Invention.  Steve Reich synthesizes influences ranging from West African drumming to tape loops. And Third Coast presents the world premiere of an arrangement for percussion quartet of architect Bruce Goff’s piano rolls\, composed by the architect on hand-cut paper piano rolls – creating both a visual and aural delight of ingenuity. \n
